The Importance of Choosing the Right Business Name

Before we jump right into our step-by-step guide to yoga business names, it’s important for you to understand the importance of making the right decision when it comes to finding a good brand name for your business so you can make money as a yoga teacher.

Yoga therapy business names

While many people aren’t aware of this fact as they haven’t had the experience of running a successful business yet, a business name and the brand identity associated with it can truly make or break a business.

Take a moment to think about some of the biggest brands in existence. The likes of Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Toyota, etc., all have one thing in common; they have insane branding, and they’re completely memorable because of it.

It may not have been the only thing that led to their success, as obviously they each own world-renowned products, and are the makers of various legacies since they’ve been in business for a considerable amount of time. However, we can guarantee that branding had a big part to play in this success.

To find the evidence that backs up the point that we’re making, all you have to do is take a look at some of the biggest brands that have risen in the past few years because of their branding.

Gymshark is a fantastic example.

With the rise in social media over the past few years, the possibility for new brands to emerge and gain an unimaginable amount of traction without an initial investment has also grown.

yoga business names social media image

Gymshark was established by Ben Francis, while he was a full-time student and a Pizza Hut delivery driver. Through developing a brand name that spoke to his audience, alongside stylish and consistent branding, he reached global success within the space of a couple of years.

Social media influencers may have played a big part in this, but without such a unique and powerful brand image, we highly doubt that Gymshark could have reached the success that it has today.

In a study on ‘phonetic effects of brand names on consumer judgements’, Geeta Menon (NYU Stern School of Business) et al write:

Past research has shown that brand names that begin with hard consonants (i.e. Kodak and Pepsi), elicit higher recognition, and occur more frequently than we would expect from the English lexicon.

When it comes to the success of business names, it all comes down to how they sound, and how they roll off the tongue.

Gymshark is simple and uses hard consonants, as do Coca-Cola, Toyota, etc. We’ll talk more about the other aspects that make names for your yoga business successful as the article unfolds, but choosing a business name that sounds successful is one of the most important.

This is evident after a quick look at some of the top business names out there, which leads us into the first step of creating the best yoga business names…

Step #1 – Market Research & Competitor Analysis

In business, it’s unwise to make any branding or marketing decisions without knowing what’s already out there. Actually, it’s unwise to make any business decisions without establishing who your competitors are, as well as gaining a full understanding of your target market.

That’s why we’ve included this as the first and most important step to finding good yoga business names ideas.

So, where should you start? We know terms like ‘market research’ and ‘competitor analysis’ can sound pretty overwhelming if you haven’t started your own business before, which is why we’re going to focus on how you should carry this out, as someone looking to write an effective yoga studio business plan.

Clever yoga business names

Naming your yoga business should always be one of the first steps that you take before creating a business plan, so this is all relevant!

Let’s start with market research. Your main aim for this should be to identify your target market, which should always be the first step before you even think about creating your business name.

If you were to pluck a business name out of thin air without completing this area of research, then you would be unlikely to succeed for a number of reasons. The main one being that the business name wouldn’t be optimised to attract members of your target market to your business.

To make things easier, we’ve included a quick example of how even 10-15 minutes of market research can make a huge difference in the progression of your business naming process.

It can give you a solid idea of the yoga businesses that are operating in your local area and the target markets that they are targeting, therefore allowing you to identify gaps in the market. Not only this, but it can give you a lot of inspiration when it comes to how you choose to name your own business.

Check out the screenshot below of the yoga businesses that are operating in close proximity to our head office in Liverpool:

Unique yoga business names

These are the top results that appeared when we searched using the keyword ‘yoga classes liverpool’, but there are tons of other businesses that can be found further down the list.

The names are pretty varied in terms of how they’ve been put together, but many of them still conform to common yoga business naming tropes, which is what we expected to see.

To give you some more examples, here are some of the other names that appeared lower down on the list of results:

  • Ashtanga Yoga Liverpool
  • Oriental Yoga
  • Yoga for the People
  • Mindful Yoga 7 Mindful Meditation Liverpool
  • Yogacita
  • Happiness Hot Yoga
  • Yoga Nation
  • My Yoga Liverpool
  • Liverpool Iyengar Yoga Studio
  • Liverpool Yoga Company
  • White Wolf Yoga

Without pointing it out, it’s evident that some of these business names are stronger than others.

We can also confirm after taking a closer look at some of the businesses, that those that would be classed as unique yoga business names seem to have stronger websites, social followings, branding strategies, and even reviews. This speaks volumes about the success of the businesses themselves, thanks to how well thought out they were pre-launch.

The business that we’ll focus on to convey our point on the importance of market research when naming your yoga business is Yogacita. We chose this one purely because it was the first name that really stood out to us and piqued our interest.

NOTE: this is the effect that your business name needs to have on your target market!

The name is effective, as it holds a warm and vibrant vibe that connotes with the service that the business provides, which is ‘hot yoga’. The logo has the same effect, being a pineapple, along with the warm brand colours.

Best yoga business names ideas image

See for yourself how effective their branding is, from the colour scheme to the logo and how it all ties in nicely with the name. If you were going to open a studio in this area, they would likely be your biggest source of inspiration, as well as one of your strongest competitors.

We are here to focus primarily on business names, but with Yogacita it’s clear that everything goes hand in hand. This is how it should always be, and if you’re interested in learning about the other aspects of the business, check out our guide to marketing a yoga business.

It’s clear that they performed proper market research before opening their studio, naming their business, and launching their marketing campaign. It’s also clear that they are a hot yoga business, and that they are aiming their services at a younger demographic.

It’s incredibly interesting that we picked them out for their name, and that they turned out to be one of the strongest brands in the area…

Hopefully this inspires you to perform competitor research before you choose your name, and shows you the level that your name and branding needs to be at in terms of conveying what your business is about to your audience.

Another thing to note is that it’s important to research the bigger yoga brands that are killing it online, as well as the independent studios in your local area. It’s 2023 after all, and the popularity of online fitness classes is growing rapidly.

You could bring a ridiculous amount of awareness and revenue (which is definitely the most important aspect to most people) to your business if you take your classes online, or if you decide to launch as a national or international business.

All you need to do is go through the process that we’ve shown you here, but shift your focus to the businesses that are operating online.

When it comes to finding out how you can make your yoga business name better than that of your competition, the aim is to be truly unique while still being relevant to yoga in general, and what your business is providing.

If you want to create clever yoga business names ideas, it’s a good idea to follow some tropes, while adapting your name to stand apart from the rest. Now that we’ve gone through market research and competitor analysis, it’s time to have a quick recap and look at business names.

Step #2 – Learning what a yoga business name should be

Before we dive into the actual process of naming your yoga business and take a look at some yoga business names ideas, we’re going to pull together the things we’ve talked about so far and more in terms of what makes a good yoga business name.

Catchy yoga business names image

This is so you don’t lose sight at any point during the naming process, and so you’re fully armed with the right information to make your business name as good as it can be.

Treat the following points as a recap checklist, and something to measure your business name ideas against when you’re trying to make the final decision. When you’re brainstorming and shortlisting, you need to ensure that you’re taking everything on the checklist into consideration…

OriGym’s Yoga Business Name Checklist:

  • First and foremost, it should be professional – skip the use of any inappropriate language
  • It should speak to your target audience, and be heavily aimed at them
  • It should be catchy and easily pronounced, and therefore remembered easily
  • It should be consistent across your website, social media channels, etc.
  • Lastly, it should be unique, whilst still fitting in with the ‘tropes’ of a yoga business name that have proven successful in the past, even if it’s just having ‘yoga’ incorporated into the name

We’ve kept this advice short and sweet for a reason, as it’s something that you can refer back to without getting too overwhelmed. There are some points that can be a little lenient depending on the type of yoga business names that you’re going for, but this advice works for most cases.

Say you’re thinking of incorporating your own name into your business, because there are others that have done this in your area, and they’re thriving.

While this might be more appropriate if you were looking into personal training business names, if it makes sense for you to go in this direction after performing your market research, you would just have to follow the advice above as closely as you could. For example, if your name was difficult to pronounce then you might consider using an acronym, etc.

You may also decide to use the style of yoga that you’re teaching in your business name, or a word relating to the age group that you’re looking to target as opposed to the word ‘yoga’ itself. This is completely fine, as long as you do so in a way that is unique and communicates what your business is about.

All in all, you need to let your target market know what you’re offering, and that you’re offering it to them in particular. If you can say all of this through your business name alone, then your branding and marketing strategies will be even more powerful.

Step #3 – Brainstorming

cute yoga business names image

When naming your yoga business, it’s a good idea to have a good brainstorm to get your creative juices flowing, before committing to the first name that pops into your head. It makes the process more exciting for one, and acts as a way of ensuring that you’re taking everything that you’ve learned before this step into account.

Before you jump straight in, you should revisit your competitor research and make sure that you have that laid out in front of you as you’re listing your ideas. It’s also important that you have access to some of the more famous yoga business names during this step, as especially if you have big dreams for your own business!

The main rules that you should stick to when brainstorming are:

  • Keep a list of successful business names close by
  • Avoid trends (as they can fade as quickly as they start)
  • Keep your target demographic in mind at all times

This enables you to think creatively about what you’re going to name your yoga business, all while sticking to logical limitations that mean that your ideas are relevant to what you’re looking for, and that they aren’t wasted in any way. In his 2017 book Creative Thinking and Brainstorming, Geoffrey Rawlinson states:

Analytical thinking is logical and leads to unique or few answers, which can be implemented. Creative thinking requires imagination, and leads to many possible answers or ideas.

We have to agree with this point, as it’s so important that you use both types of thinking when brainstorming and shortlisting ideas for your business. It may sound like a mammoth task, but it isn’t so bad when you put your mind to it. Stick to the tips that we’ve laid out for you, and you can’t go wrong!

In our experience, the best ways to brainstorm once you’ve gotten all of the vital information together include word associations, moodboards, and social media. We’ll go through and give you an example for each of these methods, and hopefully spark some inspiration for you as you’re reading.

Brainstorming with Word Associations

Funny yoga business names image

You can do this manually if you wish, by thinking of synonyms for the word ‘yoga’ and any of the words closely associated with it, but there are easier ways of finding word associations that are super relevant to your business and your brand, such as wordassociations.net.

This is a word association generator that instantaneously generates a list of words (and images!) that are relevant to the word that you input. Searching for broad terms like ‘yoga’ can give you a great starting point, and you can always try entering one of the associated words to branch out into other ideas.

We performed a quick using the word ‘yoga’ to see what came up, and here are some of the results that we got:

  • Sutra
  • Yogi
  • Meditation
  • Mantra
  • Posture
  • Guru
  • Relaxation
  • Wellness
  • Sanskrit
  • Rishi
  • Dharma
  • Astrology
  • Shiva
  • Mysticism
  • Zen
  • Alchemy
  • Healing
  • Buddhism
  • Arjuna
  • Breathing
  • Mysore
  • Visualization
  • Pose
  • Spirituality
  • Flexibility
  • Spiritual
  • Attainment
  • Practice
  • Therapy
  • Lotus
  • Devotion

As you can see, you can make a strong start to your brainstorming session in a matter of seconds.

Once you’ve got an initial list, you can then take some of your results and paste them into the search bar to find other words to add to your collection. Or, you can use the words that you find to search through Pinterest if you want to shift your brainstorming into a more visual direction (but more on this in the next section).

Providing further research using the words that you generate can take your search in a different direction, and even help you to highlight a niche that you didn’t know existed.

It can help you to make your initial ideas less abstract, and start to see how they may come together to form an effective yoga business name.

As an example, even something like ‘Lotus Yoga’ is better than nothing. While it’s not necessarily unique, it plants an idea in your mind of how the right name can seamlessly slot together.

We’ll uncover more about how you can take your business name to the next level as we move through the process, but it’s important to understand that the best business names out there will have started out as something much less distinctive.

Even Google used to be named ‘BackRub’, and we hope this information makes you feel a little less like giving up at the first hurdle!

Moodboards

You’ll probably be glad to know that this method doesn’t require you to cut out and stick down various ideas from magazines and newspapers, as this would be incredibly time consuming (and tedious for those who aren’t a fan of arts and crafts).

Nowadays, all you have to do to create a super specific mood board is to head over to Pinterest and start pinning images that have already been uploaded by their users, and optimised within their database so that they show up in order of relevance for the keywords that you use.

Like with most online tools, it’s best to stick with holistic keywords, and add something like ‘aesthetic’ or ‘ideas’ onto the end.

names for yoga business

As you can see in the screenshot above, you can get a nice selection of visuals to choose from within a matter of seconds.

If you’re more of a visual learner, or your imagination responds better to visual prompts, then you should definitely give this a try when brainstorming ideas for your yoga business.

From our own experience, the best way to search on the platform is to use searches like ‘keyword + aesthetic’, ‘keyword + ideas’, ‘keyword + inspiration’. Alternatively, you can search using the keyword alone and view the automated suggestions that Pinterest provides to get an idea of the type of content that you can find there.

One thing to note is that you can also search for boards themselves, as opposed to pins, which is an even quicker way of gaining access to moodboards. You don’t even have to make one yourself, you can use ideas that someone else has spent time collating!

Pinterest could even help to trigger some ideas for other aspects of your business, such as studio design, or lead you to some useful resources, as many bloggers upload infographics to the platform that link to their articles.

Social Media

Good yoga business names ideas

While using social media to track and research the businesses that are already out there will naturally be part of the competitor research process, you’ll be surprised to see how useful it can be for gaining visual inspiration.

Instagram is undoubtedly the best platform for this, as not only does it offer a way of viewing stunning visuals in the ‘top posts’ section of hashtags, but it allows you to gain quick access to the names of other businesses and their usernames, social media content, websites, etc. once you land on their profiles.

You can discover your biggest competitors around the world by browsing the top posts within popular yoga hashtags, and use their content to inspire you.

It’s a good idea to search using hashtags that your competitors are bound to use within the bulk of their posts, such as ‘#onlineyogaclasses’ (if this is what you’re looking to provide, and the kind of yoga business that you’re looking to name).

To give you a quick taste of how useful this can be when you’re brainstorming ideas for your own yoga business names, here’s an example:

Yoga and massage business names

These are the top posts for ‘#onlineyogaclasses’, and are evidently of a super high quality. It’s fair to say that they’re pretty inspiring, not only when it comes to putting together ideas for your own content, but also for when you’re naming your yoga business.

Let us elaborate. Most of these posts belong to the Instagram accounts of successful businesses, which makes sense considering their quality. It’s obvious that there has been a lot of thought and effort put into the posts, and it’s no surprise that those who created them happen to be successful.

If you don’t believe us, here’s a screenshot from the profile of @jacquinoelyoga, who is seen in the first post of this section:

Out of interest, we took a quick look at her website and discovered that it was brilliantly designed. Her branding is consistent across both platforms, and her business seems to be a success from a quick glance.

While all of these elements need to go hand in hand for success to happen, we can almost guarantee that the fact that her business name is simple and consistent across all platforms plays a huge part in the success of her business.

This quick analysis also shows that if you’re looking to market an online yoga business, it might be a good idea to have your own name as your brand. It highlights the importance of market research when creating your business name and branding, depending on the type of business that you’re looking to operate.

After all, the visuals on Instagram are stunning, and work in a similar way to Pinterest when it comes to unlocking your inner creativity!

Step #4 – Yoga Business Name Ideas

Now that we’ve gone through everything that you need to know beforehand, it’s time to take a look at some yoga business names ideas to give you that final touch of inspiration.

Most other articles jump right into this before explaining the thought process that goes on behind the scenes, but we really wanted to take our time so that you knew everything that you needed to know.

catchy yoga business names image

Armed with our advice, you can now shortlist a group of names that are bound to make your business a success!

So before you dive into brainstorming and shortlisting your own yoga business names ideas, feel free to take a look at the following examples that we arrived at.

Name-Based Yoga Business Names

You can view this as an ‘insert your name or initials here’ list, as we just used names that came straight off the top of our heads.

NOTE: When deciding on whether to go for a business name that is based on your own name, it depends on how catchy your name or initials are (catchy yoga business names are the key to success, after all). You might even find that your surname is more appropriate and fits better with one of the ‘yoga word associations’ that you found during your brainstorming session.

We’d definitely recommend checking out some of the bigger businesses within your niche, and make sure that at least some of them are using elements of their own name in their branding before making this decision.

If your competitors are mostly using brand names, then you might want to consider switching your approach.

Anyhow, here are some ideas based on the formats that we’ve seen used online during our competitor research.

  • Mia Yoga
  • JS Yoga
  • Instructor Marcus
  • Max Pose
  • Yoga by Marcus
  • Natasha Vinyasa
  • Trainer Lila
  • JS Iyengar Yoga
  • MYoga
  • Mindful Mia
  • Max Wellness
  • Mia Practice
  • Max Bikram Yoga
  • Hot Yoga by Lila
  • Wellness Will
  • Lila Flow Yoga

Yoga Business Name Ideas: Brand Names

Good yoga business names

Here’s a list of brand names that we put together after completing the competitor research process.

Not all of them are perfect, but this is exactly the point that we’re trying to make.

By doing this, you avoid overthinking the process and hindering your ability to come up with something simple and effective. Simple ideas are by far the best, especially when they can communicate exactly what you’re trying to express to your audience in a maximum of two words.

Once you’ve got a good idea of what you want your business and your brand to be, have a go at coming up with your own yoga business name ideas like the following:
