Level 2 Gym Instructor Course Overview
The Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification is the industry standard requirement to work as a gym or fitness instructor in the UK.
It covers how to plan and deliver gym based exercise sessions safely, carry out fitness assessments, understand anatomy and physiology, and create exercise programmes for a range of clients.
OriGym’s Level 2 course is CIMSPA-endorsed, Ofqual-regulated, and worth 10 CIMSPA CPD points. On completion, you’ll achieve the Focus Awards Level 2 Certificate in Planning and Delivering Gym-Based Exercise (RQF), which is the full formal qualification required for employment in gyms, health clubs, and leisure centres across the UK.
This qualification also provides the foundation for progressing onto a Level 3 Personal Trainer course, allowing you to expand your skills and work with clients 1-1.
Modules include:
- Anatomy and Physiology: Skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems, joint actions, connective tissues, energy systems, and the body’s adaptations to exercise.
- Principles of Exercise and Fitness: Components of fitness, exercise intensity, flexibility, resistance training, training variables, and the physiological effects of exercise.
- Health, Wellbeing and Client Motivation: Macronutrients, micronutrients, healthy eating guidelines, energy balance, behaviour change, lifestyle management, and techniques for improving exercise adherence.
- Client Consultations and Assessments: Client screening, consultations, fitness assessments, communication skills, safeguarding, and SMART goal setting.
- Planning and Instructing Gym Based Sessions: Exercise selection, teaching points, warm ups and cool downs, exercise adaptation, and session delivery.
- Professional Practice and Exercise Supervision: Health and safety procedures, gym operations, training environments, contraindications to exercise, professional responsibilities, and effective gym floor supervision.

If your course has been paid in full, your digital certificate will be requested from the awarding body. This typically takes between 3-4 weeks. If you’re on a payment plan, your certificate will be released once your balance has been cleared.
